Still life is a classic source of drawing and painting subject matter. Starting from well-observed representational work through the abstraction process.

The ‘Tin Cans’ have been drawn many times, rather like Morandi and his bottles and boxes. The first painting was done from life, and the second and third from sketches.

‘Paper Boat’ was a still life of a folded paper boat, like those we sailed as children in puddles and streams. A geometric structure with imaginative influences, this led to the painting of ‘Dream Boat’. A classic case of one thing leading to another.

‘Shoes’ is a flit round the untidy studio, with bits and pieces that always seem to be lying about as a by-product of the making of art. Sometimes there is more “rubbish” than others.

‘Bucket and Jar’ is a still life of everyday items placed on the floor. Only partial aspects of the buckets, jars and bottles appear, mainly the shapes are created by light falling on them.
